You may need a personal trainer!

How do you know?  If you can answer yes to any of these 6 questions, you may need a personal trainer.

  1. Are you totally confused about fitness routines?
  2. Have you stopped making gains?
  3. Are you unsure about your form?
  4. Do you need to be challenged?
  5. Prone to injuries and/or need Specialized Attention?
  6. Are you unsure of what and how often to eat for proper nutrition?

What is a Personal Trainer?

A personal trainer is a fitness professional involved in exercise prescription and instruction. They motivate clients by goals and providing feedback and accountability to clients. Personal Trainers also measure their client’s strengths and weaknesses with fitness assessments.

Personal Trainers at Goetz Physical Culture Center

Goetz Physical Culture Center is proud to have several independent personal trainers (Michael Coursey, David Wade and Lurline Bunt) providing their services at our facility.

* Note: All personal trainers, nutrition counselors and group fitness instructors are independent contracted service providers and not employees of the Goetz PCC. Goetz PCC is not responsible for, or party to, any agreement or financial obligation made with said contracted service providers.

By Hannah Barricks – Glen Rose Reporter

GLEN ROSE — Michael Coursey was born in Cleburne, where he spent most of his life, a self-described “troublemaker.”

Coursey would soon learn that he craved discipline and direction to get himself on the right path.

“I met Mark Goetz when I was 19,” Coursey said about his longtime friend and owner of Goetz Physical Culture Center in Glen Rose. “He was a young police officer, and I was a young troublemaker. I was doing what troublemakers do, and he was doing what police do. Our paths crossed in a significant way (and) we’ve been friends ever since.”

In 2013, Goetz invited Coursey to work in his gym, an offer Coursey initially declined but eventually accepted.

“It turned out to be the best decision,” Coursey said. “I met my wife Martha and, soon after, moved to Glen Rose … Goetz PCC allows me to share my unique point of view about health and fitness, where I believe that everyone is an athlete.”

These days, Coursey is still at the gym, usually motivating a group during a workout, personally training someone, or engaging in exercise himself. But recently, Coursey has also been campaigning for votes after deciding to apply to the Muscle and Fitness Magazine 2023 Mr. Health and Fitness competition.

Requirements for the competition are that participants have a passion for fitness and are willing to ask people to vote for them.

“It’s more like a popularity contest than a fitness competition,” Coursey said with a laugh. “But I decided it would be fun to run a campaign and see how many votes I could get; sort of like running for class president back in high school.”

The contest lasts until the end of summer, so Coursey hopes that will be enough time to generate the votes necessary for the grand prize: a spread in the magazine and $20,000, a substantial credibility and financial boost for any fitness professional.

The magazine competition comes at the heels of Coursey’s last achievement in February at the Crossfit Open, where he placed 273 out of 9,000 contestants in his age group. The Open is a worldwide fitness competition held every year and is the first stage of the Crossfit Games, where contestants compete for the title of Fittest Male and Female.

“There were three weeks of competition,” Coursey said. “My wife, Martha, and I were traveling during this time, so I had to do one workout in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. I did a couple at Glen Rose Crossfit and one at Crossfit Full Sail in Granbury. Since this competition is worldwide, it’s easy to walk into any Crossfit Affiliate and feel welcome.”

Although Coursey values family and fitness, they are still second to his faith, an intangible motivator and invaluable contributor in his evolution from childhood troublemaker to disciplined fitness magazine centerfold.

“I am a Seventh-Day Adventist Christian,” Coursey said. “And I honor the Sabbath on Saturday, so I don’t compete in most competitions because they’re usually held on Saturdays.”

The Crossfit Open is different, though, allowing Coursey to schedule and complete the required workouts on any day he wishes before the deadline.

“I look forward to the Open every year because it gives me the chance to test my fitness against other men my age (51) from around the world without compromising my faith,” he said.

Coursey said he also enjoys the Open’s inclusivity, where anyone, no matter their experience, is invited to compete. For Coursey, the Open’s acceptance of athletes at all levels bridges the gap between the most elite athletes and those moving to stay healthy.

“We are all at different levels on this journey to better health,” he said. “I enjoy being able to discuss not only the physical and mental aspects of fitness but also the spiritual, and I do my best to not only talk about that but to exemplify it in my daily life.”
