ABILENE — Glen Rose senior Zander Key medaled with a fifth-place finish in the 198-pound division at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association Class 4A Div. II State meet on Friday at the Abilene-Taylor County Expo Center.
Two other Tiger lifters also placed in the top nine of their respective weight classes.
“We had several PRs and school records broken, but the most rewarding part as a coach was seeing all of them compete with the best lifters in the state and putting together one great last meet,” Glen Rose powerlifting coach Terry Harlin said.
Key squatted 635 to break his school record, while benching 330 and deadlifting 545 for a total weight of 1,510.
At 308, Peyton Klein placed sixth overall and squatted 730 to break his school record, and he also benched 440 to break his own school record, and dead-lifted 550 for a personal record 1,720 total weight.
At 220, Ryder Cook placed ninth with lifts of 590 (squat); 415 (bench); and 475 (deadlift) for a total of 1,480.
At 181, Parker Stephenson placed 13th overall with a squat of 585 to break his own school record; a bench of 315 and a dead lift of 495 for a personal record of 1, 390 in total weight.
“I’m really proud of all of our kids and how they competed on the grandest of stages in Texas high school powerlifting,” Harlin said. “I don’t think any of them quite had the day they had hoped for, but that’s what makes them the competitors they are and the reason they had the individual seasons and season as a team that they had.”

Four Glen Rose Tigers qualify, another named as alternate for Regional powerlifting meet (Glen Rose Reporter – By Travis M. Smith, Managing Editor) Posted Mar. 1, 2016
“For the three-time Most Outstanding Lifter, Cesar Herrera dominated in the Dublin, Comanche and Stephenville meets where he bested four of his previous school records and set a new meet record with a 280-pound deadlift in Comanche.
Herrera has been extremely consistent on the bench press all season with an average lift of 258.75 pounds during the four meets. His high of 265, which he has reached twice this season, is a new school record for the 148-pound class he competes in.
His high total came in Stephenville – the final tune-up before regionals – when he accumulated a mark of 1,210 pounds for yet another school record for his class.”

“Special shout out to Michael Mora! Michael just competed in his first Bodybuilding show this past weekend and did an awesome job. His posing was spot on and earned recognition from other competitors, which is a testimony to his relentless effort. Michael endured seventeen weeks of contest prep./diet that resulted in a weight loss of 28.40 pounds and reduced his body fat percentage to 4.8! Having witnessed Michael’s character over the last seventeen weeks, I am excited to watch his further development! When his photographs are received, I’ll try to convince him to allow us to post some images. Outstanding performance!”
